The Master of Physical Education and Sports (M.P.E.S.) is a two-year, four-semester postgraduate programme offered by the School of Physical Education and Sports Sciences (SPESS), Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam. Designed to meet the evolving needs of the sports and physical education sector, the programme integrates advanced scientific knowledge, practical skill development, research, and professional training to prepare graduates for leadership roles in education, sports performance, coaching, fitness, and research.
The programme adopts an interdisciplinary approach, combining theoretical learning with practical experiences to develop competent professionals capable of promoting health, physical fitness, sports excellence, and scientific athlete development. Students gain in-depth knowledge of exercise physiology, biomechanics, sports psychology, sports nutrition, sports management, sports technology, research methodology, athletic care, rehabilitation, and professional preparation.

Students participate in structured practical sessions that include fitness training, athletics, match practice, coaching, officiating, and game specialization. The curriculum also incorporates a 90-working-day internship in schools, enabling students to gain hands-on teaching experience and develop professional competencies in real educational settings.
To foster leadership, teamwork, resilience, and outdoor skills, every student is required to participate in a one-week Leadership Training Camp, which includes activities such as river trekking, mountaineering, outdoor survival training, and basic life-saving skills.

Students undertake a supervised Project/Dissertation, allowing them to apply scientific methods to investigate contemporary issues in Physical Education and Sports Sciences.
