Established in 1983, the School of Physical Education and Sports Sciences (SPESS), Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, is one of India’s premier institutions dedicated to excellence in Physical Education, Sports Sciences, and Sports Research. For over four decades, SPESS has been at the forefront of academic innovation, scientific research, and high-performance athlete development, earning national recognition for its outstanding contributions to higher education and university sports.

Through quality teaching, practical training, and research-driven learning, SPESS prepares Physical Education professionals, researchers, coaches, and sports administrators capable of meeting the evolving demands of the sports and education sectors.

Mahatma Gandhi University has long been recognised as a powerhouse in university sports, and SPESS has played a central role in building this legacy. The University has produced numerous National Champions, International Athletes, and Olympians who have represented both the University and the nation with distinction.

Among the distinguished sportspersons associated with the University are Sebastian Xavier, Sumi Cyriac, Sony Cyriac, Shiny Wilson, Chithra K. Soman, Preeja Sreedharan, Greeshma K.M., O. Jaisha, K.J. Manoj Lal, Bijimol K.S., Sini Jose, Anilda Thomas, Anu R., Jinson Johnson, K.T. Irfan, Jabir Madari Pilliyalil, K.T. Chacko, Mohammed Al Akber, Minimol Abraham, Jisha Thomas, Jasmin George, Daisy Thomas, Roopesh Kumar, Shankar P. Gopan, Alwin Antony, and many others who have excelled in Athletics, Swimming, Football, Volleyball, Badminton, and several other sporting disciplines.

A defining milestone in the University’s sporting history was the participation of Anilda Thomas, O. Jaisha, Jinson Johnson, and Gopi T. in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, followed by Jabir Madari Pilliyalil representing India at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. These achievements reflect SPESS’s sustained commitment to nurturing athletes capable of competing at the highest international level.

Academic Excellence and Research

SPESS offers advanced postgraduate and doctoral programmes that combine theoretical knowledge with scientific application. The School promotes interdisciplinary learning and research in various areas of Physical Education and Sports Sciences, encouraging innovation and evidence-based practice.

Scientific Training and Sports Development

The School follows a systematic and scientific approach to athlete development by integrating modern sports science principles with structured coaching programmes. Students benefit from an environment that encourages physical excellence, research, leadership, and professional growth.

To further strengthen its role as a centre of excellence, SPESS is pursuing the development of world-class sports infrastructure with the support of the Government of Kerala through KIFB. The proposed projects include a 50-metre Olympic-standard Swimming Pool, Indoor Stadium, 400-metre Synthetic Athletics Track, Elite Sports Hostel, and a Sports Academia Complex, which will significantly enhance opportunities for athlete training, research, and sports education.

Promoting Sports Across the University

SPESS plays a vital role in coordinating and promoting sports and games across Mahatma Gandhi University and its affiliated colleges. By effectively utilizing the available sports infrastructure and working closely with Physical Education professionals across affiliated institutions, the School provides students with opportunities to participate and excel in regional, national, and international competitions.

The University has consistently achieved remarkable success in inter-university competitions. It earned the unique distinction of winning the All India Inter University Women’s Athletics Championship in its very first year of participation and has continued its winning tradition through outstanding performances in Volleyball and several other disciplines. Mahatma Gandhi University has also successfully hosted 35 All India Inter University Championships and more than 30 Zonal Inter University Championships under the aegis of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), New Delhi.
